What About Us?
What About Us? utilizes structured activities to help children ages 5-12 identify, communicate and cope with their feelings.
The program is based on emotional intelligence and uses a strength-based approach to promote better mental health. The aim is to build upon the child's strengths and enhance his/her ability to cope with the stress related to their loved one's cancer diagnosis. The group will:
- Increase the child's ability to understand and express feelings about their loved one's cancer
- Teach the child how to communicate those feelings
- Help facilitate coping with those feelings
What About Us? is a free program that meets for 1/2 day on a Saturday. The children’s group is facilitated by social workers with special training in cancer counseling. The children participate in activities and projects designed to help them understand and express their feelings. At the end of the session the children participate in yoga giving the social workers the opportunity to meet with the parents.
